Why become a Volunteer Academy Team Leader?
 

Becoming an Academy Team Leader is an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of young people. The St John Academy provides a fun, supportive environment where young people aged 12–17 can build friendships, develop leadership skills, and grow their first aid knowledge. 

As a Team Leader, you play a key role in guiding and mentoring Academy members, helping them gain confidence, learn valuable life skills, and reach their potential. It's also a rewarding chance to develop your own leadership abilities, contribute to your community, and inspire the next generation of St John volunteers and leaders.

The application process

Step 1 - Apply to become a volunteer – Click Apply Now on the link at the top of this page and complete your application.

Step 2 - Complete an online interview. 

Step 3 - Provide one reference. 

Step 4 - Apply for a Working with Children Check and National Police Clearance.

Step 5 - Provide all documentation as requested. Application process completed. If your application is successful, you will be offered a volunteer position with the Youth and Community Academy Team and will be contacted for next steps.

  • This application will take about 20 minutes to complete. If you cannot complete the application right now, you can click 'Save Progress' to save your work and come back at any time within the next 14 days.
  • You will need to upload a copy of your driver’s license, so have a digital copy ready (you can take a photo of it with your smartphone).
  • You will need a National Police Clearance issued within the last six months and a current Working with Children Check. If you do not already have these documents, St John can assist you in obtaining them.
  • We also require you to complete a medical questionnaire as part of the application. All these steps are there to ensure your safety and the safety of the people you’re helping. 

What the role involves

  • Plan, organise and monitor the Academy Division activities. 
  • Attend Academy Divisional meetings, and other meetings as required. 
  • Ensure a safe working environment for self and others by championing the Child Safe Code of Conduct.


Expectations

  • Attend a minimum of 4 division nights per term.
  • Support the Division Lead in preparing activities and lesson plans.
  • Stay up to date with all Academy Guidelines, Policies and Procedures. 

Skills required

Essential Requirements

  • Working With Children Check (St John can assist you with the application process)
  • National Police Clearance
  • Provide First Aid Certificate

Desirable Requirements

  • First Aid for Mental Health
  • Current C-class driver’s licence

Personal Attributes

  • Strong capability to communicate and lead in accordance with established protocols.
  • Capacity to be adaptable and flexible, and to solve problems in order to achieve results.
  • Exceptional time management skills and well-developed communication skills. 

The Onboarding Process

  • Complete Advanced Child Safeguarding training.
  • Complete mandatory organisational training.
  • Complete Provide First Aid course (1-day course provided by St John) or submit evidence of current certification (must be less than 12 months since date of issue).
  • Attend Welcome Induction via Microsoft Teams (approximately 1 hour).

Skills you will develop

As an Academy Team Leader, you will develop your leadership, management, communication, planning and peer and youth coaching and mentoring skills. You will gain a wider knowledge and understanding of St John WA and the Academy guidelines, policies and procedures. All skills developed could assist with any applications with St John WA.

  • All our volunteers are provided with the necessary training to carry out their roles. To continue operating in your role, you must maintain the required competencies.

To become a volunteer with St John Ambulance Western Australia, you will be asked to complete an online application, including a medical questionnaire and the following:

  • National Police Clearance (valid within the past 6 months)
  • Current unencumbered drivers' licence (no probationary or learner drivers, and no more than 7 demerit points)

All our volunteers are provided with the necessary training to enable them to carry out their role. 

To continue to operate in your role, you must maintain the competencies required and an appropriate level of fitness as roles are physically demanding.

All information concerning our volunteers is treated as strictly confidential at all times.

Your volunteering for St John Ambulance should not cost you anything.

We will reimburse all legitimate out of pocket expenses incurred during your time volunteering with us. 

You should talk to your supervisor to confirm what expenses you can claim.
