The Data Science and Analytics team at St John WA use data analysis and visualisation tools to help the organisation make informed decisions to better serve the WA community.  

Current team members have diverse backgrounds with qualifications including physics, mathematics, engineering, health, psychology and business, and have previously worked across the government, private, academic, consulting, and defence sectors. 

An exciting opportunity is available for a graduate or junior level analyst to join the team. This is a permanent full-time position based in Belmont.

What you’ll do:

Your job will be to help senior leaders and frontline staff solve problems and make better informed decisions by analysing and visualising data. In doing so you’ll have a direct impact on the delivery of life saving ambulance services, urgent care, and first aid training across WA. 

This is a diverse role in which you’ll work with stakeholders, business processes, and complex data sets spanning operational, financial, workforce, and contractual domains. In doing so, you’ll use a range of business intelligence and analytics frameworks and tools. 

You will be part of a highly capable, motivated and collegial team, which works collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to provide high quality services to St John WA and the community. 

In a typical day you might: 

  • Meet with internal stakeholders to understand a challenge or opportunity they need your help to address 
  • Engage domain experts to understand the business process and how real-world actions are recorded in front-end systems 
  • Identify, extract, analyse, and visualise relevant data, and then present your results and recommendations via an easy-to-understand report. 
  • Proactively troubleshoot and problem solve any issues that arise 
  • Document and coach other team members on what you’ve learnt about business processes, data sources, and definitions 

You will have strong support from management and the broader team, with ongoing training and coaching provided across all aspects of the role and the opportunity to develop both technical and business skills. 

What you’ll need:

The key attributes to succeed in this role are excellent critical thinking skills and attention to detail.  The successful candidate will be someone who enjoys working with complex data sets to identify insights, while at the same time engaging with stakeholders to understanding their business and effectively communicate results to inform real-world decisions. 

More broadly, successful candidates will demonstrate: 

  • Excellent critical thinking skills 
  • Strong analytical skills, a quantitative mindset, and ability to work with large and complex data sets 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to explain complex concepts clearly 
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong planning skills 
  • Ability to work both autonomously and in a team environment 

It is also beneficial (but not necessary) if you have:  

  • Knowledge of database and analytics concepts 
  • Exposure or experience in common industry tools such as Excel and Power BI, as well as coding or query languages such as SQL 

The required qualifications: 

Tertiary qualification(s) in a quantitative subject (such as mathematics, business, science, engineering or data analytics) or comparable professional experience in a relevant field
