This position sits within the Data Science and Analytics team at St John WA which uses data to help the organisation make informed decisions to better serve the community.

The Data Science and Analytics team consists of four units: Operational Analytics, Strategic Analytics, Data Insights, and Data Science. The team has grown rapidly over the past six years as the organisation continues to embrace the value of data and analytics, and works in close partnership with the Data Engineering and Governance team.

An exciting opportunity is now available for a Senior Data Scientist to join the team, based at our State Office in Belmont, on a 12-month full time contract.

What you will do:

The Data Science unit helps tackle challenges or opportunities requiring a combination of specialised skills in statistics, programming, machine learning, and associated tools and methodologies.

The unit’s focus is using data science techniques to convert data into actionable information that delivers community benefit, using a ‘fail fast’ approach of rapidly prototyping products and then iterating to improve those which provide value.

In a typical day as a Senior Data Scientist you might:

  • Develop and maintain data science products (such as demand forecasting models)
  • Apply specialised simulation tools to model the effect of various scenarios on the performance of emergency ambulance services (such as increasing the number of crews assigned to a Station, changing roster patterns, or introducing specialised ambulance crew types)
  • Present results and recommendations from modelling in an easy-to-understand report, infographic, or visualisation
  • Meet with senior executives and operational leaders to understand a challenge or opportunity they need your help to address
  • Proactively seek out possible applications of data science products/services, and clearly articulate the positive community and/or commercial impact
  • Engage domain experts to understand business processes and how real-world actions are recorded in front-end systems
  • Investigate and document business processes, data sources, and modelling solutions
  • Provide training, coaching, and quality assurance to less experienced data scientists in the unit
  • Lead complex, end to end data science projects and programs – including engagement with analysts, data engineers, other subject matter experts, and external parties
  • Provide expert advice on the selection and implementation of appropriate data science tools, methodologies and frameworks

What you will need:

Experience:

  • 4+ years of experience in data science focussed roles
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering complex data science projects

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Excellent critical thinking skills
  • Ability to synthesise varied sources of information and address complex issues requiring research, investigation, analysis, and the practical application of problem-solving skills
  • Ability to communicate technical information to stakeholders without domain expertise
  • Strong knowledge of a wide range of machine learning and statistical techniques, ideally including LLMs and AI agents
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Strong skills in SQL, Python, and Azure based data science tools (or transferable alternatives)

Qualifications:

  • University qualification (or equivalent demonstrated experience) in data science, business analytics, computer science, statistics, or other quantitative field
