The Organisation

St John WA holds a contract with the Department of Justice to deliver comprehensive nursing services across multiple correctional facilities throughout the Perth metropolitan region. This includes the provision of thorough health assessments, ongoing clinical monitoring, and timely escalation of care to ensure the health, wellbeing, and safety of detainees are maintained. Services are provided across male, female, and juvenile correctional facilities.

The Opportunity

Work within Casuarina Prison in both the Assisted Care Unit (ACU) and Outpatient Services. The ACU is a newly opened 39-bed unit offers a diverse and rewarding scope of nursing practice. Staff will be well supported by a Department of Justice Clinical Nurse Specialist and Nurse Unit Manager, providing a strong clinical leadership framework.

About You

You are a compassionate and resilient nurse with exceptional clinical judgment, communication skills, and the ability to adapt in a dynamic and secure environment. 

Key Responsibilities:

As part of our Primary Health Care Team, you’ll play a vital role in supporting the health and wellbeing of people in custody by:

  • Provide safe, high-quality nursing care in a correctional health setting 
  • Manage acute presentations and chronic disease management 
  • Collaborate and liaise within a multidisciplinary healthcare team 
  • Conduct thorough nursing assessments, monitoring and escalation of care for patients in custody. 
  • Adhere to relevant facilities standards, policies and procedures 
  • Effective communication skills and ability to maintain professional boundaries 

Essential Requirements

  • AHPRA registration as an RN (no restrictions) 
  • Minimum 5+ years recent nursing experience
  • Current National Police Clearance within the last 3 months 
  • Current Advanced Life Support Certificate 1 (or willing to obtain) 
  • Valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate 
  • WA Working with Children Check 
  • Cannulation/Venepuncture competent  
  • Ability to pass comprehensive background and integrity checks. 

 Desirable Requirements:

  • Recent experience in acute care, primary health or custodial services. 
  • Immunisation certification.
