As Legal Counsel at St John WA, you will join a collaborative and close-knit Legal Risk and Governance team and provide a range of legal advice to the St John WA Group. You will work closely with a variety of passionate stakeholders, working across a variety of challenging and diverse work, enabling the business to meet its strategic and operational objectives in compliance with our values, the law and within acceptable risk frameworks and corporate policies.

This a permanent full-time role working in our Belmont State Office. You will work a 37.5 hour week Monday through to Friday, with flexibility regarding start and finish times. You will have the ability to work from home up to 2 days per week, post probation.

What you’ll do:

  • Provide commercial legal advice to the business across a broad range of areas to protect the interests of the St John WA Group
  • Work collaboratively and effectively with key internal stakeholders and with external stakeholders, such as external legal counsel, suppliers, regulators, and customers
  • Provide strategic legal advice and support to offer commercial and pragmatic solutions
  • Identify and manage legal risk mitigation strategies within acceptable corporate risk frameworks and policies
  • Advise on emerging new legislative and industry changes requiring attention
  • Research and provide advice on relevant law to ensure the business can meet its operational and strategic objectives while acting lawfully and within acceptable risk parameters
  • Support the development of corporate policies and procedures to promote good corporate governance within the St John WA Group
  • Contribute to and participate in department objectives and activities

What you’ll need:

  • University degree in Law from a University in Australia, and admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Western Australia         
  • Current and unrestricted practising certificate in Western Australia
  • 5+ years post admission experience (a minimum of 3+ years as in-house counsel is highly desirable)
  • Significant and demonstrated experience in a broad range of laws including commercial law, general corporate advisory, competition law, procurement and tenders, property contracts, and corporate compliance
  • Broad understanding of court processes, work health and safety law, data privacy, and intellectual property
  • Experience with briefing out matters to external legal counsel and managing the legal budget within financial constraints
  • Experience operating in a regulated environment
  • Experience in drafting and negotiating of commercial agreements
