The Fleet, Radio, and Equipment Department at St John WA plays a critical role in ensuring the operational readiness and safety of the organization’s statewide vehicle fleet. Comprising a dedicated team of 30 skilled professionals, the department is responsible for managing over 1,000 ambulances and transport vehicles across Western Australia.

Their responsibilities include the full fit-out of vehicles with essential medical and emergency equipment, the installation and maintenance of advanced radio communication systems to support real-time coordination, and the integration of other vital technologies. The team also oversees routine servicing, mechanical repairs, and preventative maintenance to ensure vehicles & medical equipment remain reliable and compliant with safety standards.

About the Role:

We are looking for a Trade Assistant to join our Fleet, Radio & Equipment department on a 6-month fixed term contract. The Trade Assistant supports the effective operation of St John WA Fleet Workshops by providing hands-on assistance in the maintenance, repair, and preparation of the organisation’s vehicle fleet.

What You’ll Do:

  • Support mechanics and technicians with basic servicing, repairs, and general maintenance of fleet vehicles and equipment
  • Help move vehicles, parts, and equipment where needed
  • Assist with preparing new vehicles for operation, working closely with the construction team
  • Drop off and pick up vehicles or parts from external contractors as required
  • Keep service and repair records up to date in the fleet management system
  • Maintain vehicles and equipment in a clean, safe, and roadworthy condition
  • Respond to basic enquiries from internal and external stakeholders via phone or email

What You’ll Need:

Essential

  • 2 years of experience required in similar role
  • Experience working in a workshop, trade, mechanical, or hands-on operational environment
  • Knowledge of systems, tools and process within the ambit of this position.
  • Ability to safely use basic hand and power tools
  • Willingness to learn and take direction from qualified trades staff
  • C Class drivers’ license
  • Trade pre-apprenticeship or mechanical aptitude

Desirable

  • Forklift licence
  • Light Rigid (LR) license
